What Does an ABS Pump Actually Do?
The ABS pump — more precisely the hydraulic control unit (HCU) or ABS modulator assembly — sits between your brake master cylinder and the wheels. It contains a small electric motor, a set of solenoid valves, and (on most vehicles built since the late 1990s) the ABS control module itself, either bolted directly to the unit or mounted nearby. When a wheel speed sensor detects a wheel about to lock up under braking, the unit rapidly modulates hydraulic pressure to that individual wheel, which is what you feel as pedal pulsation during a hard stop. On vehicles with traction control or electronic stability control, the same unit can also apply brake pressure on its own, without the driver touching the pedal, to help maintain control. Because it's a hydraulic and electronic assembly working under pressure, once its internal valves or motor start to wear, it usually shows itself gradually before it fails outright.

A stored fault in the hydraulic control unit or its internal module is one of the most common reasons these lights stay lit. A scan tool will usually show a pump motor, valve, or pressure sensor code specific to the ABS module rather than a wheel speed sensor.
If the pedal pulses, sinks slightly, or feels different at a stoplight with no ABS event happening, a solenoid valve inside the unit may be sticking or leaking internally, letting pressure bleed off on its own.
The pump motor inside the unit is a wear item. A grinding or high-pitched buzzing noise, especially one that runs longer than a normal self-test cycle after startup, often means the motor or its internal bearings are failing.
If a wheel speed sensor has already been replaced and the same code returns, the fault may actually be in the module's internal wiring or processing circuit rather than the sensor itself.
Fluid seeping from the valve body housing, or fluid that keeps dropping in the reservoir without a visible leak elsewhere in the brake system, points to an internal seal failure inside the unit.
